The process of nationalising occupational health and safety (OHS) laws across Australian states (‘OHS Harmonisation’) continues. Once completed this will provide uniformity of OHS laws and will make things much easier and cheaper for organisations that currently travel and operate across states and therefore multiple OHS legal jurisdictions. A classic example is for major food and beverage suppliers or entertainment tours operating across the country.
The new Model Work Health and Safety Act was endorsed by the Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council on December 11, 2009. Safe Work Australia is now making technical and drafting amendments before finalising the Act for approval before their next meeting on April 29, 2010.
